público o publico

In lesson 2.4 the first sentence uses the word público but the second sentence leaves off the accent mark - publico. Why?

Hi. I tried to find the lesson you're referring to, but the numbers don't seem to correspond to anything like 2.4. Which set of Rocket Spanish lessons were you looking at? Premium? Premium Plus? Platinum?

Anyway, since I can't look at the lesson, I can't tell for sure. However, I can say that when público is used as an adjective (to mean public, like a public announcement) or as a noun (as in "my public adores me" ), it always has an accent mark over the u. However, if it's being used as the first person singular present tense of the verb publicar (to publish or to publicize), it would be publico (I publish) without an accent mark. (Of course, if it's not being used as a verb, there's always the possibility that someone simply forgot to add the accent mark. )

Hope that helps.

By the way, this lame-brain forum software can't seem to put the smileys where I put them. This is not the first time this has happened. Oh well, it's not exactly an earthshaking problem.

It was in Premium 2.4 - Travel

Conversation in Spanish
Amy Permiso, señor. Necesito los baños públicos. ¿Dónde están?

Mauricio ¿Los baños publicos? Veamos. (Speaks rapidly.) Es como... derecho dos cuadras, a la izquierda dos cuadras-no, una cuadra, y de allí al final de la calla están.

As you can see, in both cases, it is used as an adjective.

Yes, you're right. I think that's just an error--there should be an accent over the u.

And thanks for letting me know where it was. I'm not sure why I had trouble finding it last night (probably too tired), but this will help for the next time my brain has a power outage. [I would put in a smiling face, but this cockamamie forum software will probably put it in the wrong place again. I really preferred the old forum, though it was somewhat harder to keep spam-free.]

Hmmm....I just had another instance where I posted a message and it didn't show up. I'll try again. Thanks to my Firefox extension Lazarus, I can recover anything I write in Firefox. Lazarus has saved me lots of times...it's the extension I value most highly. Anyway, here's what I wrote that didn't show up:

nohablo's reply shows blank here, but I got the email notification and he says he thinks that "publicos" was just a typo.

Thanks very much, Bubba, for posting your follow-up message. I've now written to Rocket Spanish about this problem and have received an encouraging response. I'm hopeful that they'll find whatever bug is preventing me from posting. It only happens de vez en cuando (i.e., from time to time), so it may prove hard to track down.

I hope I'm not pushing my luck. I just succeeded in posting this message, but I decided to add the fact that "he" is a "she".

Oh sorry about that nohablo.

No te preocupes, Bubba. No hay problema.
