Hola leeallen, *Tan* - means _"so"_ or _"as"_ and is used when expressing a comparison - *Tan XXX como YYY.* -which is equivalent to the English expression "as XXX as YYY". For example: _"__As__ tall __as__ her."_ *__Tan__ alto como ella.* In the construction *Tan XXX como YYY.* - you can replace the XXX by any adjective: *Ella es __tan__ grande como yo.* _"She is __as__ big __as__ me."_ *Ellos son __tan__ inteligentes como nosotros.* _"They are __as__ intelligent __as__ us."_ *No estamos __tan__ felices como quisieramos.* _"We're not __as__ happy __as__ we would like to be."_ So use *tan* when you have two people or two things and you want to express a comparison between the two. Remember this phrase - "tan ... como" (as...as). -Mauricio :)
