I'd really like help with pronouncing my Chinese student's names. I've signed up to Rocket Chinese so I can reach out and extend a bit more of a welcome in their language.

When we encounter Chinese names here is the USA, we typically are given English sounding names, that is assuming they have not adopted American first names. Then, it is an approximation. You really then need to ask for the Chinese character and from that determine the tones.

Learning pinyin pronunciations may help you get close since that is probably how they get the English spellings.
