12.9 reflexive pronouns

RobS49

Ich suche mir morgen eine neue Arbeit.
I am looking for a new job tomorrow.

Ich werde mir morgen eine neue Arbeit suchen.
I will look for a new job tomorrow.

Sie suchen ein neues Au Pair Mädchen.
They are looking for a new au pair.

Sie werden ein neues Au Pair Mädchen suchen.
They will look for a new au pair girl.

I understand--or at least I think I do--why the first two examples require the reflexive pronoun "mir" with the verb "suchen". What I don't understand is why the last two examples that also use "suchen" don't use "sich". Would it be incorrect to say: "Sie werden sich ein neues Au Pair Mädchen suchen" or "Sie suchen sich ein neues Au Pair Mädchen"? Any help is most appreciated. Thanks.

Hallo RobS49,

Both "Sie werden sich ein neues Au Pair Mädchen suchen." and "Sie suchen sich ein neues Au Pair Mädchen." are correct. You would add sich when you want to make clear that you are looking for an au pair girl for your own family instead of just saying you are looking for one which could possibly be for another family.

I hope this helps.

Grüße
Julia
