Lesson 19.4 contains the sentence ‘Das Thema waren die Hoelenmenschen’. Why is it ‘waren’ and not ‘war’?

This confused me too. I think the way is works is that the waren agrees with die Hoelenmenschen rather than das Thema as it would in English. The subject is die Hoelenmenschen
