“Gab” vs “War”

I have just seen this sentence: “Gestern gab es im Fernsehen eine interessante Sendung”

I was wondering if it is possible to use “war” instead and when it is better to use “gab”.

I think it would be OK to use war with a slight rearrangement.
Gestern war eine interessante Sendung...
