The literal translation is Frohen Geburtstag, but I'm told that is not all that commonly used. More common expressions are below, and I'm sure there are more.
Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag! Literally congratulations on your birthday.
Alles Gute zum Geburtstag! (Have a good birthday!)
All das Beste zum Geburtstag! (All the best on your birthday!)

Thank you Byron! I saw the post and thought this is something for you.
In a conversation it can be like this:
Norway: Hi, habe gehört du hast Geburtstag?
Paul: Stimmt! Da hast du richtig gehört.
Norway: Na dann herzlichen Glückwunsch / na dann alles Gute zum Geburtstag.
Paul: Danke!
Norway: Wie alt bist du jetzt? / Wie alt bist du geworden?
Paul: 32
It is ok to ask the age in Germany.
Gruß
Paul

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the post. Here it is not OK to ask, especially in the work place, and that information is kept private by your employer. Socially, it depends. Younger people (under 40) and elderly people (over 80) generally aren't sensitive about it. People in between, especially ladies, often are.
regards,
Byron
