"isshukan" wa nan yoyuu imi desu ka, is wat I hear listening to a Japanese dialogue. Should this not be: ichi shukan nani o imi desu ka? (what does one week mean?) If I'm wrong, please explain. Thank you

I'll try and help. Ichi shukan and isshukan are interchangeable. I have a feeling the latter is less formal. To me, your suggestion seems correct, with the addition of "tte" to quote the "ichi shukan" So: "ichi shukan" tte nani o imi desu ka? I'm not entirely sure. Also, to my knowledge, yoyuu is a kanji compound meaning, allowance or margin. Perhaps you misheard "nani wo" for "nan yoyuu". Maybe Derek or Sayaka can help. Some other ways you could get across the message: "isshukan" tte nan desu ka? Eigo de, isshukan no imi wa nan desu ka? I hope this helps. Try checking a transcript of the dialogue, or tell me the name of it so I can try to help you more. Cheers ;)

Thank you for your reply, but I have no written text of this. Maybe there is a way to upload an audio fragment to you and give it a try to listen? there is some other stuff in the dialogues: "suki desu" wa nan to iu imi desu ka? I've heard several times and I seem always to hear the same thing. domo arigatio

Ah. "Suki desu" wa nan to iu imi desu ka?\n\nWhile I don't know this particular structure, I wouldn't doubt it's correct.\n\n"to iu" is like an equivalent of "is called", \n\nfor example. "Kuroshitsuji" to iu manga o yonde imasu. I'm reading a manga called Kuroshitsuji.\n\nSo a more literal translation what you suggested would be something like : \nAs for "suki desu", what meaning is it called by? \n\nThat's just my suggestion. I'm not entirely sure. Like I said, someone like Derek or Sayaka would be able to help more. \n\nAlso, you could attatch the audio file and email it to me at [redacted] , and I'll have a listen.

A word or phrase PLUS "-wa nan to iu imi desu ka?" means "What is the meaning of 'word/phrase'?" So, "Suki desu - wa nan to iu imi desu ka?" means "What is the meaning of 'Suki desu'?" (answer - Suki desu means "I like something/someone") -Sayaka ;)
