As a completely new person to Korean, this course is not what I should have chosen to begin with. To be able to feel like you "completed" the lesson, you have to write things in a language they have not taught you yet! The lessons are too long and having to learn the "extras" to feel like you completed the material they were focusing on is also frustrating. I have no incentive to move through the material, because I feel like I can't even perfect the first few lessons!
The voice detection sometimes is very poor, which means saying the same thing fifty times at lightning speed to get credit for it. I like other programs for learning Korean better than this one. I might come back to it after I have a better foundation.

Response from Rocket Languages

Response from Rocket Languages: The Write it! tests can (and probably should) be left until you are more comfortable doing them. In saying that we will look at how these Tests work for beginners. With regards voice detection, the best results are achieved with a headset mic, or using one of the apps.

What customer service? I'm only in the first lesson though, so we'll see. Im an intermediate spanish learner from university classes and took the placement test, but I wish there was a way that would tell me what I need to study or what level to be at so I don't have to pick one at random. It seems kind of expensive compared to other options, I really liked pimsleur a lot too, and rocket spanish doesn't seem as streamlined. It does give practice on speaking though that other sites didnt. I've tried paid Duolingo (level 72), and paid pimsluer (finished Module 2), I even tried paid spanish dictionary.com (which was better than expected), and this is the only one that you don't have a monthly fee for. It also has A TON of content, but lacks some of the gamification of duolingo so it's a little more dry. The learning seems less intuitive and listening based than pimsleur though. I'll update the review if I make it through very much more of rocket spanish, but this was the fourth time it asked for a review so here it is.

I think that the content is really good and I have enjoyed the level 1 course that I purchased. However, the advertising seems misleading. They promise that you will reach a good conversational level after level 1. However, they do not teach you past tense or future tense. For example, it's pretty hard to have any conversation without learning how to ask "How was your weekend?" or "What did you do yesterday?" Also, after paying, $99 for Level 1, you have to pay an additional $149 for level 2, in which you do start getting into past and future tense (at least you do in the free teaser lesson). If they described the contents of each level better and had a pricing structure that made more sense, I could probably give it a five.

Response from Rocket Languages

Thanks so much for your review and feedback. Rocket Spanish is a comprehensive course, with a lot of content to cover in order to effectively teach spoken and written Spanish. While we do cover one means of talking about the future in Level 1 (the equivalent of "going to”), more lessons on the future and the past tenses can be found in Level 2, as this fits in with the CEFR level descriptions, since you're only expected to be able to talk about past events and future plans at B1 level.

Rocket Spanish Level 1 is equivalent to CEFR levels A1/A2
Rocket Spanish Level 2 is equivalent to CEFR levels A2/B1
Rocket Spanish Level 3 is equivalent to CEFR levels B1/B2

We will email you with a copy of this information, and encourage you to send any questions you might have to our customer support team on [email protected]. All the best with your language learning!

Course #1's audio lessons were really excellent. The timing of the dialogue/repeat sections is spot on, the native speakers have very clear accents, and you learn a lot quite quickly. It is easy to put them on in the background and make several additional passes through the material to cement the teachings. I found the accompanying grammar lessons to be difficult to retain in the 'mostly text' format, and they often don't follow along with where you are in the audio lessons at all.

Course #2 is somewhat the opposite. The native speakers (and host) all have distinct accents, the dialogue timing is a mess, and the content is all over the place. One minute you're basically redo-ing a lesson from Course #1, and the next you're totally lost when everything switches to 'casual' speech, which you've had almost no exposure to thus far. Alternately, the grammar courses are now structured to expound upon specific parts of the audio, which is an improvement.

I was VERY happy with Course #1 overall, but I am soured on the audio portion of Course #2. When the dialogue-repeat sections sometimes go word-by-word, but give you 10 seconds to speak, it becomes very difficult to learn the line in entirety.

Hi Richard, I would like to thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback on the Rocket Japanese course. Your review is greatly appreciated. We are happy to know that you enjoyed Level 1 of the course. However, we're sorry to hear that the audio lessons in Level 2 did not meet your expectations. I have already passed your feedback on to our Rocket Japanese team, who will take it into consideration while working on future course updates. Thank you again for your valuable feedback, and we wish you all the best with your Japanese language learning!

Overall, I understand the structure of the course, but it seems like many aspects, especially in testing, are done by a cookie-cutter algorithm which makes some really critical mistakes.

First, some technical issues. I use Chrome, as recommended, and there are a few things missing. Most notably, the on-screen Korean keyboard is not there. Also, I often do not have the button to mark a Writing lesson as completed. Finally, unlike in the app, there is no way for me to cut a voice recording off if I wish to restart, which often means waiting quite a while for the program to try to sort through gibberish.

Now, for the "cookie-cutter" aspect that bothers me. Frequently in the Audio lessons, the native speakers will say something that was not part of the lesson. This is fine, except that these phrases get put in the testing sections. For example, in the very first lesson there are introductions of the two native speakers. One says that he served in the Korean Marine Corps, then was discharged and migrated to the United States with his parents. He says this in Korean. This is a great way to get acquainted with the sound of the language. However, then this phrase comes up in the testing section of the exam.

Response from Rocket Languagess:
Thanks for the thorough feedback. We discussed this in-house and have the following comments:
1. A Korean keyboard is coming, as is the ability to rate a lesson that has no Tests (like the Writing lessons).
2. That is a large undertaking for arguable impact. Nevertheless, we will add it to the discussion for upcoming features.
3. Our courses are designed so that members can pick and choose what areas they wish to work on. It's ok to leave out harder phrases and come back to them, as the system stores the individual phrases rating.
4. Again, we will add this to the discussion for future features.
5. As far as we are aware there is nothing racist about our courses. Please follow this up with customer support support @ rocketlanguages.com

Starting from beginning Spanish i was thrown off the cliff suddenly with complete sentences. There is no bridging the gap from rudimentary words to complete sentences. Need to work along side with google translate.. Frustrating.

Response from Rocket Languages

Sorry to hear that you're having trouble! It looks like you might have skipped a number of lessons in the course which understandably made things difficult for you. We've emailed you with some information and are always here to help if you need a hand with your learning!

TL:DR -These courses are worth bothering with and a fair deal but don't expect perfection or a miracles.

This was sold to me (by external reviews) as being better than Rosetta stone and the current market leader in comprehensive language learning for self study, and yeah it is better and may be the best all around, but its still far from perfect. There are other products that are distinctly better for certain aspects of Japanese study, but this one is a good all-rounder.

It is very much like a by the book language study course that you would get in a generic language school.
Its not ground breaking, but its very solid and should successfully teach any diligent student some extent of their target language.

Given that you get hundreds of hours of lessons that you can do at your own pace I think the price is great value but I can't quite give 5 stars because there are some flaws in the product and service.

Unlike many free apps you aren't limited to 5 or 10 mins per day which means that the system can take its time to teach you slowly and methodically, and that if you have a lot of free time (and almost everybody does at the time of writing mid-April 2020) then you can do an hour or more everyday.

Response from Rocket Languages

Response from Rocket Languages: Hi Sean - Thanks for submitting a review. Some interesting observations in there! I thought that I would comment on a couple of things;

This year Rocket Japanese is scheduled to have a total review of the course content. We realize that there are some issues and are moving to address those.

With regards the romanization toggle; this seems to be working. Can you please provide screenshots to customer support of where it doesn't seem to be working?

There was an issue with the voice recognition difficulty in that you had to refresh the page for the change to take effect. That has now been rectified, so it should just work.

And we will look into the review system as well. In fact we are re-factoring the entire members area into a new code base, so it's timely to look at some aspects that haven't been looked at for a while. The new version is due out later in the year.

Response from Rocket Languages

Hi Safia, thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We're glad to hear that you have found our Rocket French course helpful. We understand that our pricing may seem high. However, we have made the decision to offer our courses for a one-time fee that provides you with lifetime access, not a subscription, because we believe that learning a language is a lifelong commitment.
