I very much enjoy RocketChinese. Of course, you get back however much you are willing to put into it. If I stick with it, a little every day, I find I learn very quickly.

I started learning Chinese two months ago, I used at the time Apps Duolingo and Memrise. In both apps I made some kind of artificial progress, but in the fact, I could not understand the structure of sentences. There is a difference between them: Duolingo gives you some sense for the nature of the sentence building, but there is no grammar explication on it. Memrise makes you tired through repeating words and their meaning, in the same way as reading some huge vocabulary. Human being cannot learn in this way. Both apps work with multiple choice questions: so, you learn to be able to choose the best answer between several alternatives, but you don' learn the words and sentences themselves.
The Rocket Chinese has in the fact a classic approach to the learning process: you read a little text, then you can see the translation and then you make some exercises with the words you met. It is a very nice feature to exclude all known words and to repeat the exercise again with the difficult words only.

After seeing many different sources to learn Chinese I am glad I chose Rocket Chinese. I got a great deal during Christmas which was definitely worth its price, and there is a huge amount of material to explore. The best feature that makes the difference is the voice recognition that motivates you to speak and practise pronunciation. Obviously, it is not 100% accurate, but it is much better than expected compared with other voice recognition software. The dialogues are really useful too, and the mini-games are pretty good at helping you learn the new material. The only part that could be added is some exercises to help you learn the characters as this is a challenging part of the language with not enough attention given. Only the Sort It exercises focuses on the characters but it is far too easy and not enough to help you memorise them or understand their meaning.

I'm an engineer and reviewed many competing products like Pimsleur (too audio oriented), Rosetta Stone (no English explanations, just clicking on pictures), Duolingo (not sophisticated enough) and others and finally decided on Rocket Chinese. I was pleasantly surprised with this product because it explains everything I'm learning in English and has wonderful tests, flashcards, and other tools to help me learn. The first lesson started with Ni Hao which is what I expected, where as other applications did not. Highly recommend Rocket for learning any language.

Excellent course material, covers all the reading/writing/listening and speaking components of learning a language. Progresses very smoothly and plenty of ways to brush up on older material with flashcards or listening and translating.

Response from Rocket Languages

We are so glad to hear that the course is working for you. We wish you the best of luck with your future language learning!

So far, it is an excellent investment. I like the variety of study materials provided for each lesson. As well as giving a little bit of cultural insight into things. There are times when the audio detection seems a bit off and doesn't pick up what you're saying accurately, and it assumes you're saying something totally off. I don't mind repeating myself to get scored correctly; practice makes perfect anyways. Just one minor flaw that I have seen thus far.
