Hard vs Soft Consonants

A special feature of the Russian phonetic system is that it has two types of consonants, "hard consonants" and "soft consonants". The vast majority of consonants are hard unless they are followed by the soft sign - Ь or the letters Е, И, Я, Ю and Ë.
