How to say Goodnight in French
French people will make a difference between;
- bonne soirée, literally "good evening," used only when leaving people to wish them a happy evening, before they go out for example,
- and bonne nuit, which translates into "good night," and is used solely when leaving someone who is about to go to bed at night.
Bonsoir is used to greet someone in the evening. People will say "bonjour" until 6 pm or so, and then will switch to "bonsoir".
