Кафе is a general term that covers lots of eating places: from coffee shops to fast food. Big cities like Moscow and St Petersburg have hundreds of them. You will recognize the word кафе when you see signs like кафе-кондитерская (sweet-shop café) or кафе блинная (pancake café). There are of course lots of different ethnic restaurants which will have different names, but just follow your nose.
