Use of 睡 (shuì) and 得 (de)

Robert-C7 August 22, 2014, 9:22 pm
Consider this sentence from lesson 5.1.

Zuótiān wǎnshàng shuì de hǎo ma?
Did you sleep well last night?

The verb 睡 (shuì) is one of those that requires an object. The dummy object for this verb is 觉 (jiào). So to sleep one 睡觉 (shuìjiào). The dummy object is not used if an actual object is provided. In the sentence above, is the fragment 得好 (de hǎo) acting as an object?

Also I notice 得 (de), as opposed to 的 (de), is being used in 睡得好. My grammar book says that one of the uses of 得 (de) is to indicated how something (sleeping) is done (well).

Generally, we use only single characters before the particle 得 and since the verb 睡觉 is of a verb-object construction, the object is dropped and the compliment is added after the 得 in order to express the degree, potential or result of the verb. There a few notable exceptions such as some double character verbs that cannot be split up such as 翻译.

This is quite a difficult topic to cover but here is a link that provides a clear explanation of the use of the particle 得. I hope you find it useful.

Keep up the good work and 加油!

Thank you for your explanation. I had a hunch it was something like that. I do not see the link which you said you were providing.
