Da Lezione 5.9:

Mi piaceva andare al ristorante, ma adesso preferisco mangiare a casa.
I used to like eating out, but now (I) prefer cooking my meals.

I am certain the the correct translation is "I prefer to eat at home"
As I have said before, the difference is small, but it you want to learn Italian well, it is all important!

Hi JackK15,

Thanks for your  observation - it's indeed correct!
The current English translation refers to the implicit meaning of the Italian sentence, which is in fact that  I prefer cooking my meals at home instead of eating out (mangiare a casa vs mangiare al ristorante).
However, as you correctly noticed, the literal translation is "I prefer to eat at home" (which we'll update as the current translation could cause misunderstandings).

Thank you for sharing this!

Hi Caterina,
I was having a similar problem with the English translation for the this sentence in Lesson 5.9.
The Italian is:
"Mi piaceva andare al ristorante, ma adesso preferisco mangiare a casa."

The English translation given is :
"I used to like eating out, but now (I) prefer eating at home."

The first part of the English translation doesn't seem right, it's doesn't mention "to go (andare)" or "restaurant (ristorante)".

My interpretation of the Italian sentence is:
"I used to like going to the restaurant, but now I prefer to eat at home."

Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Thank you so much for your question!

Your observation is indeed correct: "Mi piaceva andare al ristorante" should be literally translated as "I used to like going to the restaurant".

When saying "to go the restaurant" one implies "to eat out", that's probably why it was translated as "I used to like eating out, but now (I) prefer eating at home."

However, I find your comment to be 100% right so we're going to update the translation accordingly!

Thank you so much for your contribution.

Regards,
Caterina
