Hi, when do you use ‘davanti a’ or ‘di fronte’, as they both seem to meaning.

Thanks

Gary

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your question!

'davanti a' and 'di fronte' are usually interchangeable:

e.g. Davanti alla farmacia c'è un piccolo negozio. = Di fronte alla farmacia c'è un piccolo negozio. (They both mean that there is a small shop in front of the pharmacy).

However,  while 'di fronte' specifically mean 'in front of', 'davanti' could also mean 'ahead'.

e.g.  Carlo era 20 metri davanti a me. | Carlo was 20 meters ahead of me.

Hope this helps :)
