I'm not sure what ichiban atsukatta hi wa kinou desu means.
Does it mean The hottest day was yesterday.
or Yesterday was the hottest day.

In english, both sentences are correct and mean the same thing, and the translation that you did for "ichiban atsukatta hi wa kinou desu" is good :).

Simply translated, this sentence means: The hottest day was yesterday.
Or yesterday was the hottest day.
Similarly you can change the order of that sentence to say:
昨日が 一番 暑かった 日です。
Yesterday was the hottest day.
