Nihao everyone! I'm trying to understand the breakdown of Nihyakugoju.

I know Ni=2 , Hyaku=100, Go=5 but what is Ju?

こんにちは (Konnichiwa) Heru-,

Thank you for your question!

The word じゅう (jū) means “ten," so the じゅう (jū) in にひゃくごじゅう (nihyakugojū) refers to the number “ten."

Japanese uses a number stacking system where numbers are combined to create larger numbers.

For example, (go) means "five” and じゅう (jū) means “ten." When we combine those together, we get ごじゅう (gojū) “fifty” - literally, “five tens.”

Here's another example: さん (san) means “three"; when we combine さん (san) “three” and じゅう (jū) “ten” we get さんじゅう (sanjū) “thirty” - literally, “three tens."

In the number にひゃくごじゅう (nihyakugojū) we have:

(ni) = “two”

ひゃく (hyaku) = “hundred”

(go) = “five”

じゅう (jū) = “ten”

When we combine that all together, we get “250” - literally, “two hundreds five tens.”

I hope this helped!
