こんにちは (Konnichiwa) Gary K,
Thanks for you question!
The verb おきます (okimasu) can have many different meanings depending on the context. It can mean “wake up/get up,” “put/place," or “occur/take place" depending on how it's used.
As you pointed out, when it's used with a time it means “wake up/get up" and when it's used with a location it means “put/place.”
It's common for Japanese verbs to have more than one meaning. If you're unsure which meaning is being used, it's a good idea to look to the kanji or read the context of the sentence to figure it out. For reference, the kanji 起きます (okimasu) means “wake up/get up" and the kanji 置きます (okimasu) means “put/place.”
I hope this helped! Please let me know if you have any other questions.
