I just subscribed to TV Japan and am learning lots of new words.  The two latest are:
問い, question, query
and 戦線, war front.

What words have you learned from somewhere other than Rocket Japanese?

Many from the N4 study books like 踏む ふむ to step on, 非常口 ひじょうぐち emergency exit かむ to chew.

Another sentence to add instead of the 予約をしました よやくをしました I made a reservation is 予約を撮って よやくをとって I took reservation which is also the same as in a test I scored 100 points テストで百点を撮った

Technically わら(い)—laugh; laughter— but I see it used everywhere on twitter as the equivalent of LOL (laughing out loud) .

I finally have the N3 level books for the JLPTs I plan to do next year and have 2000 new words to sort through and remember. I will add a few interesting ones I come across on here.

I am loading it all into BYKI flash card programs and by new year I intend to learn them all. I find the BYKI program is the best flashcard program to use but it is a discontinued product and as soon as this computer of mine goes, the program goes along with it and the activation key for it. As long as I have the files I created saved I can load the older BYKI 3.6 version and import the cards. With that 3.6 version that I can keep loading onto new computers I cannot create and edit my own cards.

The BYKI deluxe version allows editing. The flashcard program as a whole has a stale timeout function that makes you review them. There are several sides to the flashcards.
1- is view
2 - is recognise and mark yes or no. When complete
3 - is write it from seeing foreign side.
4 - is know it from seeing English side and saying it in foreign side
5 - is to write it in foreign side which means knowing it as well.

5 sides to flashcards opposed to front and back on this site.

If I get the chance I would love to communicate with admin directly about changes to their flashcards that would enable better memory retention.

しょっぱい
salty
*there is kanji for the "しょ" part, but indications are that the word is usually written in kana

It's unfortunate that BYKI was discontinued. Based on the handful of videos I've seen on YT, I would have purchased the deluxe version if it were still an option.

故  prefix for "the late, deceased".  I went to the funeral of my Japanese helper tonight.  He would have wanted me to learn a new word from his death.  Pronounced "ko".

天才    pronounced tenn sai

Learned from my Kanji studies.

密室殺人
みっしつさつじん
misshitsu satsujin
Locked room mystery

While trying to remember another word I learned from reading The Tokyo Zodiac Murders by Soji Shimada (島田 荘司), I found this one. It's the Japanese word used to describe the genre that in the west is called "locked room mystery", but the kanji technically says "locked room (密室) murder (殺人)".

My condolences on the loss of your friend Claudia.

夫婦茶碗, thank you.  He was a good person to ask questions of when I got confused on a Japanese problem.  He was so excited that I wanted to learn Japanese, so I will miss his wisdom.

すんごい
It's a variant of すっごい or すごい
dreadful OR amazing
Came across it in a Japanese tweet.
Tony-S10

Tony-S10

Could have been a typo. I have never heard of it being sungoi only sugoi.
teacup

teacup

I thought it might be a typo too, but Jisho.org lists すんごい as another form of すっごい . It's not mentioned under the entry for すごい, but if you look at the entries for すっごい and すごい , they have the same translations:
  1. terrible; dreadful
  2. amazing (e.g. of strength); great (e.g. of skills); wonderful; terrific
  3. to a great extent; vast (in numbers)

Seems random that it would list it. I have a physical dictionary I bought in Japan last year that is titled precise and it does not have the sun version in the reverse lookup. The word has a kanji and is listed as an adjective.

煎茶
せんちゃ
green tea

Strangely not included in Module 1.2 "Tea Time"
Tony-S10

Tony-S10

There are a lot of tea varieties not included in the modules. buncha, mugicha. From my recent extended studies I need to build up vocabulary outside this course and then get stuck into grammar.
