October 26, 2010

Hola William. Near the top of the lesson page there is a line that starts out CONVERSATION IN SPANISH CONVERSATION IN ENGLISH .......QUIZ So it is not really an icon. Just click on QUIZ. I recommend that you click on EXTRA VOCABULARY too. I copy all the words (and their meanings) in the lesson and the EXTRA Vocab into the Vocab creator and then play the Vocab game to keep the words fresh in my mind.

After experiencing Pimsler, Tell Me More, Rosetta Stone, Spanish Like Crazy, and a multitude of other Spanish language software, Rocket Spanish is light years ahead of them all. Simply, the best out there for understanding and fluency. It makes this beautiful language come to life.

Hola Paul, I envy you being able to go to Spain three times a year¡Que bueno! I was there a number of times 40 yrs back when I was in the Navy. I spoke very little Spanish but with a phrase book I could get along some. Having studied with Rocket Spanish would have made that a very different experience. I now order in Spanish at el restaurante and speak with checkout folks at stores etc. every chance I get. Keep with it and don't be shy. Using it is the best classroom. I could have written this in Spanish and in a year or so you from now you would understand it. Que tengas buen viajes y buena suerte. Rich

Hola! I am trying so hard to learn Spanish. I hope to be able to converse without too many problems in 6 months. How long has it taken the others to go from REAL beginner to conversational Spanish.

Hi Daniele it depends how often you practice - I went from real beginner to conversational in 6 months with lessons & a tutor every week. My advice is to buy childrens educational books in Spanish - it's amazing how quickly you absorb the vocabulary and simple phrases. Good luck !

Thanks Roy, good idea. I will get some childrens books. Did you find that Rocket Spanish was not enough?

December 7, 2010

It's enough Daniele if you only intend getting to the level of conversational Spanish, but like any language if you want to go a lot further it's better to try a variety of things, including watching Spanish movies, speaking to Spanish native speakers, TV, listening to Podcasts, reading and of course doing a formal course like this. But Rocket Spanish is an excellent course so please don't think I am saying it is not enough.

Hola Danielle, I have taken a college course, completed and reviewed 3 levels of Rosetta Stone several times, and listened to Univision regularly to train my ear, as well as work through most of Rocket Spanish Platinum. Everything is helpful, but Rocket Spanish is the best for me and I always recommend it when asked about learning Spanish. Most of the time as I listen and watch Spanish TV I only hear the words, frequently without knowing the meaning of all of them, but it helps me get my ear trained to pick out the words at a speaking pace and to get the meaning of the conversation without getting hung up on the words or constructions that I don't understand . My college professor recommended that. The subtitles help, also. I am able to understand. everything on Saturday morning cartoons on Univision. I read Spanish newspapers and magazines and practice vocab and conjugations on Word Champ. Check it out. Perhaps I would do better if I spoke Spanish more. I read something interesting that said you just have to put the time in with the language, reading alot, writing and practicing ear training. And I get impatient and people tell me, John, it's a marathon, not a sprint! I've been studing about 5 years, mas o menos. ¡Buena suerte!

Hola Paul L, ¡Que maravilloso! I know how you might feel, intimidated with your language skills listening and speaking to natives. Maybe you can look at it this way - we all start where we are and we can't EVER learn the language if we don't use it. I feel the same way, very awkward, stuck for that word to complete my thought - slow . How do you feel when you hear someone with poor English skills? Probably not so bad - I think at least they are trying to adapt to our culture, aren't they? And similarly, so are you. Many people will accept that we don't speak it so well and most will help us out and think better for our effort. We are like children learning the language, stumbling, maybe with an accent, just do it and keep trying. you will get better as you practice and you only lose if you quit.

I see all these programs where you will speak like a "native." I've lived in Michigan for 23 year and still have my Pennsylvanian accent. When I realized that I am what I am and the fact that I'm trying and that people will understand within the context of my sentence if I'm saying pero or perro.

I am thinking that to speak like a native, you have to be a native - or live in the country for a good long time. That's not saying that we shouldn't try to speak Spanish as well as we can though. I have ran into many people from Cuba and Mexico that do not speak English perfectly, but I always wish I could speak Spanish as good as they could speak English.

Bueno! Just thought I would check in after working on my Rocket Spanish coursework for about two weeks. Although I have spoken "Sesame Street" Spanish for some years where I used to work, I want to become more proficient after moving to a community largely populated by Hispanic residents. I've joined a Meetup Spanish speaking group that meets periodically about once a month so I am really looking forward to that. Hope to keep communications with you all and I think the children's book idea sounds very doable.
