Pronunciation of "ll"

Hello

My understanding is that the "ll" in Spanish makes a y sound as in yellow and not the "j" sound as in jar. When I'm reviewing the lesson below the word “llega” isn’t pronounced yega but jega and I’m not understanding why. Is this the difference between Spain Spanish and Latin American Spanish? I tried to paste a picture of the lesson but couldn't. The best I can do is post a link.

This one is really dialect-dependent.  In some places its a y as in yellow and in some places its closer to a j.  In Argentina, it's actually closer to a sh sound, like shega.  All are “correct” for their locality.  I'm not exactly sure which pronunciation goes where, but I know in a lot of places in Mexico its more like a soft j.

¡Hola, MichaelC301 y MichaelTS!

MichaelTS is absolutely right! The pronunciation of ll varies depending on where you are, but the two most common pronunciations are similar to the English “Y” and “J.” You'll hear both in the Rocket Spanish course materials.

If you're interested, you can find a full explanation on this in the intro lesson “How to Pronounce Spanish Words,” under the heading “Letters With Different Sounds.”

Do let me know if you have any further questions!

Saludos,

Liss
