Adjective placement - before or after the noun

In lesson 5.1, I notice that the word ‘piccolo’ is placed BEFORE the noun ‘appartamento’ in one sentence but AFTER it in another sentence.   What is the grammatical rule here?

Ciao Barbara,

The position of the adjective "piccolo" (small) before or after the noun "appartamento" (apartment) depends on its function in the sentence and the intended emphasis. Let me explain:

1. "Un piccolo appartamento" - Here, "piccolo" precedes the noun "appartamento." This is the most common word order in Italian when the adjective is expressing a permanent characteristic or quality of the noun. In this case, "piccolo" directly describes the size of the apartment.

2. "Un appartamento piccolo" - In this sentence, "piccolo" follows the noun "appartamento." This word order is often used when the adjective is emphasizing a temporary or relative characteristic. It can also imply a contrast with other apartments that might be larger.

So, both forms are grammatically correct, but the choice between them depends on the specific context and the speaker's intention to emphasize either the size or another aspect of the apartment.

I hope this explanation was helpful! If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Saluti :)
