how come some words have il and la before a word and some don't
its confusing me so much

Hi there,
words like "la" and "il" are called articles. Articles show the gender of a word. Only nouns have an article.
Nouns are words like "apple", "woman", "Language" etc.
Depending on the gender of the noun you use different articles.
You will find that other words, like action words don't use articles.
