Hey everyone, I'm wondering if "(stare) ____endo" is completely interchangeable with indicative? Such as stai leggendo vs legghi, sto lavorando vs lavoro, stiamo pensando vs pensiamo, etc.

Thanks!

Hi Mike,

Yes, they are interchangeable.

They both describe actions happening in the present, but the gerund form is used to further emphasize the "process" of the action: while "leggo" means "I'm reading", "sto leggendo" could be translated as "I'm in the process of reading now".
Essentially, however, you can use them as synonyms.

Hope this helped!
