Can anyone explain how “ Ce li chiedono” translates to “They ask us for them”?

Isn't ‘Ce' the indirect pronoun?

Shouldn't it be “They ask them for us”?

Hi there,

thanks for your question!

The translation is actually correct. “Ce” could be translated as “To us”/"For us" (depending on the sentence). In this case:

Ce (to us/us) li (them, masculine) chiedono (they ask)

They ask them to us.

Let's take another example:

Te li chiedono = Te (to you/you) li (them, masculine) chiedono (they ask)

They ask them to you.

Me lo chiedono = Me (to me/me) lo (it, masculine), chiedono (they ask)

They ask them to me.

Hope this helps :)
