I'm wondering what the difference is between non and no? My basic understanding was that the Italian non is used similarly to "not" in English, and that the Italian no simply means "no" in English. However, why do we: Use "no" here: Perché no? Why not? (Lesson 5.3) But "non" here: Perché non andiamo stasera? Why don't we go tonight? (Lesson 1.4) Thanks so much.

Hi Bunni, No is an adverb indicates negation/ disagreement, e.g., no grazie/no thanks; stai bene? No. Are you well? No. Answer yes or no to a question. Non means not or non in English. Examples: non alcaholic/non alcaholico adj non-believer n non credente m. e f. ... Non ancora Not yet Non adesso Not now. Non andare! Don't go! Non capisco niente! I do not understand anything! Examples from lesions that you gave Use "no" here: Perché no? Why not? (Lesson 5.3) Perché non andiamo stasera? Why don't we go tonight? (Lesson 1.4) are correct.
