When I click on the keypad, I would like for it to go to the alt section where I can select the accented vowels or ñ. That is the only reason I click on it. Otherwise, I just type. Having shortcuts which I can type without clicking on something would be nice too (which you are suggesting).

I would like to suggest that they make the spanish letters available in the forums too.

I have really found that switching my computer to the US Intertnational PC keyboard in Settings is a great solution to typing accented characters. On a Mac:
Settings>Language and Text>Input Sources, uncheck any other input sources and check the US International PC box.
Accented characters are made by first typing ' then the vowel. ñ is made by typing OPT+N then N ¿ is made by typing OPTION+SHIFT+?, ¡ by OPTION+!.
I think this is much easier than using the little keyboard thingie, and it works in any application where you need to make these characters.

I second Dan's recommendation...I use the US international keyboard and it's much easier and it doesn't take too long to get used to it.

Dan & Cari you are both correct. I use the International keyboard as well. However, only in the last few days have I realized that I can switch back and forth easily using my "home key" and space bar versus going into settings and making the switch. Come to think of it learning Spanish is easier than trying to figure out my computer! Jajaja

Patrice: what is the home key? I've not heard of that way of switching.

Hola, Dan. I have windows. Two keys to the left of my space bar is a key that is referred to as the "home key". It is a short cut key to return me to my desk top, or in conjunction with the space bar moving from one keyboard to the other. It has the 4 windows logo or design on this particular key too.
