in lesson 1.8 the words pollo&bello do not sound like they are pronounced the same, it sounds like pollo is pronounced po-cho & bello be-jo. am i wrong, or just not hearing it right.

The way words are pronounce vary from a spanish speaking country to another, you may notice that in Argentina , for example the double L words sound more like a "ch" sound rather than to a "J" (a J in english, of course), but the correct way is "Po jo" or "po yo" and "Be jo".
