I think you use 'esta' when referring to a feminine noun and 'este' when referring to a masculine noun. ie. este perro (this dog) & esta chica (this girl)

Kristy is absolutely right...it only changes depending on the gender! Just be carefull if the "esta" comes with an accent on the "á" as in "Mi casa está en la playa"...you are indicating a place...."My house is at the beach"...besides that, "este" y "esta" and even "esto" are the same ;).... saludos!

Do "aquella" and "aquel" mean the same thing as "esta" and "este"?

Hola Kntlne! Aquella , Aquel and Aquello...are used in a similar way "That" is used in english...in the case of "Esto, Esta and Este"...are used as "This"... Remember that "Este" also means "East" ;) saludos!
