If you ask "¿Donde estas?"...you would be asking "Where are you at?"...rather than asking "where are you from?"..

¿ De donde eres? where are you from? ¿Donde estás? where are you? ¿De donde estás? is asking of where are you and doesn't make sense. Spend sometime with ser vs. estar. It will be helpful and rewarding. Te prometo y buena suerte. Rich
