Adjectives after a verb

Maxie

Hi All

In the lesson on Adjectives in the Nominative and Accusative. The lesson starts with Adjectives that come after the verb, don't change.

In this sentence it does. Could someone please clarify this.

Es ist ein großer schwarzer Koffer mit kleinen Rädern.

Why does Grosser change then?

Vielen Dank

Hallo Maxie,

Thank you for your question! This rule only applies to adjectives when they come after a verb and aren't followed by a noun. In the example above, however, the adjectives are followed by a noun (Koffer).

You could turn the sentence around, though!

“Der Koffer ist groß und schwarz." Now, the endings don't change.

Viele Grüße,

Julia

Hi Julia

Ahh, now I get it. Thank you. So amny little things to understand and remember. What I do like about adjectives is they do relect the gender of the noun at times and can see the gender by the adjective at times. A very organized logical language, even so not easy, but then learning something new never is.

Hi Sharon,

Checking in here after a bit of a break. I've been very busy with the local Goethe-Institut, took and passed their B2 exam, which was more intense than I thought it would be, and have followed up with several of their conversation classes, which have been really great.

I've also been following up with my app, have bit the bullet and moved it into a cross-platform dev environment. So many friends and family, my beta community, have Android, so few iOS. It's held things up, but I'm now only a few weeks away from having a version that can work everywhere.

At any rate, the working title is ‘WurstHatZwei’ and it's all about (and only about) the endings. Your post here reminds me that I need to include some reference to the uninflected adjectives that follow nouns, even if that rule is intuitive and easy.

If I remember correctly, you will have already returned from your European trip. Did you go? And how was it? Our plans have firmed up, and we'll be in Vienna over Christmas. Time flies!

Hi Doug

Was wondering how you were doing and I think you told me that you had a family trip planned for sometime in the summer. Well done on passing that exam. We are back from Germany and had an amazing time. 4 grown up kids and a boyfriend, so 7 in total. Philip and I spent a week exploring. Got to meet up with my German pen friend and the back to Frankfurt to meet the kids. Then up to Dresden, most of them hiked the Maler Weg. Stunningly beautiful. Stayed in a rural area in a lovely house with garden, then a quick trip to Bavaria to Grainau for 2 nights and then back to Frankfurt to drop kids and we then had another 2 days to ourselves.

My German was great, in the Dresden area I spoke a lot of German, as our property manager spoke Russian and German, no English. I was surprised how natural it felt. Met friendly people eveywhere and spoke lots. I was quite surprised how relaxed I felt about speaking. The grammar Was not always spot on, and I was aware of that. Which when you are having a conversation you are thinking on your feet so to say. Can't wait to go back. I would like to cycle from Passau to Vienna. Or the Romantic road.

Have signed up for something called Seedlang. Very good for revision. I do French Spanish and German on it.

Take care

Sharon

Thanks

Hi Sharon,

Thanks for asking!

Actually, larger formats are better, so a tablet works better than a phone. To be honest, i haven't even figured out a strategy for phones yet.

But a computer has lots of real estate, so would be really good. My new platform is flutter/dart, which enables Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and browser/website possibilities. I just need to choose my options, then figure out channels and distribution.

Are you on Windows or Mac?

Doug

Hi Again

Sounds really interesting. I use a MAc and I have a Lenova Tablet. Still prefer the Mac. Only use my phone for Rocket if I am away.

Keep me posted

Hi Sharon,

I'm getting close to uploading the app for start of testing to the App Store, targeting macOS and iOS for iPad.

Would you be willing to be an early user? I'd post you an email address to take this up off line, but Rocket auto-redacts email addresses, so I'll have to figure out a good way to get us connected out-of-band..

I'd be very pleased to get your feedback on this app.

Thanks,

Doug

Hi Doug

Not sure how to get my email to you, but am happy to test your new application.

I have shared my email on Rocket before, so can try that

Hi Sharon,

I tried yesterday and it was auto-redacted, so they've tightened since you managed it.

Let's try to slip the bot by breaking it up:

Hope that works, and that we haven't offended the gods!
