Hallo Sebongela!

The meaning of auf very much depends on the context. It's also one of the prepositions that can both take the accusative and dative case depending on the situation, for example:

“Das Kind spielt auf dem Spielplatz.” (dative) - “The child plays on the playground.”

“Das Kind möchte auf den Spielplatz gehen.” (accusative) - “The child would like to go to the playground.”

Other examples using auf are:

  • “Das Buch ist auf dem Tisch.” - “The cup is on the table.”
  • “Das bin ich auf dem Foto.” - “That's me in the photo.”
  • “Ich bin auf der Party." - “I am at the party.”
  • “Was heißt das auf Deutsch?” - “What does it mean in German?”

Viele Grüße,

Julia
