Hi All

Was doing a revision on “Going Skiing”

Noticed that with “neben” goes “dem”

Knew it had something to do with the cases. Made a comment this wekk on Dative in the forum.

Having listened to a podcast on Coffee Break made the connection with neben and dative case.

I feel that is why I use different resources, some paid many free.

My husband wants to do the Mahler Hike in Germany near Dresden. Due to Duolingo  realized that Maler is painter and could make the connection. Thrills me when I have these aha moments and I can see dots gradually connecting.

I know that many are scathing about Duolingo, but it does have its good points.

Hi Maxie,

it's great that you have found many resources to help you learn German! Just a little note that neben is a two-way preposition which means that it can take either the accusative or the dative case depending on whether there is a change of position/movement or static position, for example:

Setz dich neben mich. - Sit down next to me. (accusative, movement)

Lena sitzt neben mir. - Lena is sitting next to me. (dative, static position)

Viele Grüße,

Julia

Hallo Julia

Vielen dank.

I love the way that it all seems to eventually fit together like a puzzle. I assumed the neben in Accusative would require movement, but was not sure about the Dative. So now another piece of the puzzle solved.

Thanks

Maxie

Ps

Do you live in Germany?
