I understand that this course teaches a few sentences that sound odd. "Wie ist dein name?", which SUPPOSEDLY translates to "what is your name?". If "Wie" means "how", shouldn't "Was" be used instead because it translates to "what". Someone please clear up this confusion!

I think the issue is that words don't always translate exactly from one language to another, so whilst wie normally translates to as how, in some situations it must be translated as what.
Or to put it another way Germans like say how are you called? or how is you name?

As far as I can see anything to do with asking your name takes wie.
