Why is the following verb, to be, in the 3rd person singular (not plural)? Das ist beides im Zentrum.  German Lesson 3.3

It's a bit weird,  "beides" is singular.
beide refers to two people or two of the same thing.
Beides refers to two different objects or two actions or activities
Beide sind
Beides ist
