Superlative forms

In lesson 3.6 , there are two superlative forms,am ____+sten and der/die/das _____+ste . Which form should be used in general ? What time should each form be used ? Coolcader :)

Hi Coolcader, From what I can tell, there are some differences depending on the part of speech. For example predicate adverb versus predicate adjective. Er singt am besten. (predicate adverb) Er ist der beste. (adjectival noun) The article I read is pretty technical grammatically. There are many more examples. There might be some cases where either form is correct. Perhaps a native speaker can help us out.
