The position of the word "Gerne"

Perhaps you can give me a definitive rule for the placement of the word "Gerne" or "Gern"....I notice that sometimes it follows the verb directly and at other times it appears at the end of the sentence....The lesson of 7.1 is a good example of this....I think it is the second and third lines where they vary considerably....perhaps it is subjective as to where this word is placed? Thanks, Armani

Hi there, "gerne" or "gern" has different meanings depending on when and how the word is used. There is also the term "gerne mögen" or "gerne haben" meaning "to like". As you know there are some verbs in German with a suffix (something added to the front of the original verb) that get separated in a sentence. Here is an example: austeigen = to get off ( for example to get off the bus) Ich steige aus = I'm getting off. (the bus) The term "gerne mögen" behaves in the same way, which means that the first part will move to the end of the sentence. gerne mögen = to like Ich habe dich gern = I like you. gerne haben = to like/ to have a liking for Er hat Dreck in seiner Wohnung nicht gerne. = He doesn't like dirt in his apartment. The example you are referring to is : Ich mag Musik aus den 70er Jahren total gerne. = I like music from the seventies a lot. The second example is: Ich mag U2 total gerne und auch manche deutsche Gruppen, zum Beispiel “die Toten Hosen”, “die Arzte” oder Herbert Grönemeyer. The reason the "gerne" is not right at the end of the sentence is because the "und" signals a new sentence or part of the sentence. For example: Er hat Dreck in seiner Wohnung nicht gerne und zieht immer seine Schuhe aus.= He doesn't like dirt in his apartment and he also always removes his shoes. I hope that clarifies it. Let me know if you would like some more examples.
