Hi Nesha,
It is a verb with a separable prefix. For example, abfahren (to depart)
Der Zug fährt um Punkt 9.00 Uhr ab.
Unfortunately, you can't always infer the meaning from the prefix and the verb. Take vorstellen as an example. Stellen means to place or put and vor means before, but vorstellen means to imagine, so that's a stretch.

<p>Hi Nesha,</p><p>'Trennbare Verben' is 'separable verbs' in English and means that the prefix separates from the verb stem when conjugated as you can see from Byrons example. There are separable and inseperable verbs in German. The inseparable prefixes are: be–<i>, emp–, zer–, ge–, <i>ent–</i>, ver—,</i> and <i>er–.</i></p><p>Like in English there are various prefixes that produce new meanings when added to base verb. Common base verbs in German are 'gehen' and 'kommen'. </p><p>Example 'gehen': Eingehen, Aufgehen->rising, Vergehen->to <span>vanish or to commit</span>, Ausgehen->going out.</p><p>Die Blume ist eingegangen. -> The flower shriveled.<br></p><p>Ein Verbrechen vergehen-> commiting a crime.</p><p>Es ist vergangen->It vanished.</p><p><br></p><p>Hope that helps!</p><p>Paul<br></p>

I just started the audio lessons and they keep referring to "written material". I assume nouns, verbs and conjugations etc. But I can't find them anywhere on the site.

Hi there,
I recommend you the lessons 1.7 and 12.9 irregular verbs in the language & culture section.
Let me know if there is anything else that you are confused with.
