Why liegt?

Page 4 of lesson 3.2 Hier _liegt_ am meisten Schnee. Why not Hier ist am meisten Schnee. I'm just horribly confused. Thanks in advance for any help. Jerry

Hi Jerry, thanks for your question. "liegen" means " to lie". When referring to snow you can say "da liegt viel Schnee" or "da ist viel Schnee". In German it's more specific (and therefore sounds better) to use "liegen", but it's also absolutely fine to say "ist". I guess in English it is more common to say "there is snow" and therefore the translation is more natural. Sorry to confuse you, I hope it makes more sense now. :D
