A riddle

HI All

This was sent by my pen friend in Germany. I spent some time trying to figure it on with the help of the internet.

Thought some of you may want to look at it. I think I understand why. Really stretched my brain at first as was thinking of all possibilities

1. Warum heisst es am Morgen "das Korn" und abends "der Korn?

2. Warum heisst es am Morgen "der Weizen" und abends "das Weizen"?

Hi Maxie

That's a tough one/

I guessed that it might have something to do with alochol.

However the explanation I found was that das Weizen and der Korn are contractions for beer and spirts. So das Bier and spirits are masculine eg der Schnaps - or something like thatt :-)

HI Simon

That is what I found. When my friend sent it to me went down a huge rabbit hole. Her husband wanted her to send it to me. She told him my German was really good. :) Not so sure about that. Still struggle with adjectives and their endings.

She will explain it to me and I'm sure it will be a great explanation. She should have been a teacher. I love it when she sends me stuff, mostly idioms. I like that as it expands my vocabulary. Was learning the words “sich wohlfueln” Was going through a cupbpard and found these words on a shoe box “Der schue zum wohlfuelen” made my day, I might add.

Keep well

HI Simon

This how my friend explained it. Her husband is delighted and is going to think up some more.

Das Korn means grain in general and der Korn is Schnaps. Same with Weizen: der Weizen is the wheat and das Weizen means weiss beer or as we call it Weizen Bier. By the way, Korn is an old fashioned sort of Schnaps in Germany which is nearly only drunk by old men on the countryside.

Thanks for the explanation Maxie.

It made me think how strong the gender of nouns is.

We have some very nice schapps from Germany, a plain one and an orange flavoured one which is delicious. Schapps hard to get here in th UK.

Hi Simon

Just wathing a YouTube video on Adjectives. I still struggle to remember those. Am getting the hang of cases.

Schnapps is not for me just too strong. Wine is my drink of choice. I must say I did enjoy the Radlers in Germany. I'm afraid I'm quite boring in the liquor department. 2 drinks my absolute limit even after one feel a bit squiffy. And that said do not like feeling out of control. :)

Have been looking at a battle in Roamn times, in the Teutoberg Forest. We came across a museum near Kassel for the Harzhorn battle. Sadly it was closed being Sunday. Also Saalberg Fort was impressive. Lovely grounds too. The structures have been rebulit , but still ruins evident. Was a huge complex.

Hated history at school. South African history was so biased and controlled by the government. Would be interesting to see South African history books now. Hopefully more balanced and realistic.

Have a good day Maxie

Hi Maxie

The Teutoberg Forest battle is really intersting, there are some youtube videos on it. There is also  a Netflix sieries called Barbarians which is about the battle, if you are interested.

I mostly drink wine too, but I do like Octoberfest beer and the occasional schnapps if it's a good one.

Hi Simon

Watched the YouTube ones. We no longer have Nettflix. We used to share it with our daughters and then they changed the system. We were hardly watching and told the girls we were cancelling, as we were footing the bill. I do miss some of the international shows for language though.

I want to explore that region of Germany if we go back. My friend's husband's is from the North sea region and that looks lovely. We can then do some of Denmark too.

Have a good weekend

Maxie
