Colour coding nouns for gender

sfpugh

I wonder if anyone has tried colour coding nouns for gender on flash cards. I saw this suggested on a germman learning web site. eg red - feminine, blue - masuline, green - neuter

This can be done with Anki and Quizlet appears to have it in the paid version.

I've alwas had trouble remembering genders except for nouns with gender specific endings.

I've started to have a go with it in Anki but is extra work to make the cards.

So far I am a bit in two minds if it is worth it but I will persist for a while. May be it suits some types of learners that others.

Hi Simon

I am struggling with keeping all the genders straight too. In Survival kit they are all mixed up and I have now created gender specific categories in the various topics. I have also saved many nouns with a translation if I am unlikely to remember the word, as well as then adding the gender. That way if I am not sure in other sentences I can click on it and see what gender it is.

Have found that really works for me. Also less complicated than creating flashcards. Some just stick others not so much

Have fun

Hi Sebongela

That's an intersting way of learning gender. I saved short snippets of sentences that I thought might be usefull as well as words, then I exported them to a csv file and used them to make flasch cards. I really hate flashcards, but I can't see another way as I need a lot of repetition when learning new words.

I am hopeing that I will come to associate the nouns with their coulors visually, I will have to wait and see.

Color coding by gender sounds like a really clever learning tool to me.  The more senses involved, the better.  One would think a high-functioning teaching tool might even have that as an option that could be turned on/off.

I'll add that I'm still frustrated any time I see a lesson here that introduces a noun WITHOUT the article.  ALWAYS include the article when you introduce a new noun.

Hi All

I agree would be great. At this stage every time a new noun is introduced, or one I cant remember(which is frequent) I just save it and add the gender. Even new vocabulary gets highlighted. Then whenever it appears in other lessons I can click on it as a reminder.

At the end of the day this is an amazing learning device and no leanring device is perfect or will ever be and that is why I use a lot of different resources including books.

Hi All

An old topic I know, but am finding it hard keeping all the cases straight. I have highlighted them in Vocabulary. Certain ones when highlighted will show when I have made notes Eg. “Fur” has meaning and notes. So when I have saved it it shows up with meaning and always accusative. Many only have notes, not meaning. When I save it and click on it the notes don't show up only the meaning. Is there a reason why some words only have notes and not a meaning section. I find this frustrting, as I use these vocabulary saves for gender, meaning, cases etc.

Any other good suggestions out there?

I am not sure if I have understood correctly, but there are two types of notes:

“Saved Notes” - These show up in the Saved Notes section of tools and also in the specific lesson. If you look towards the bottom of the left window, there is a Notes icon which has a red dot if there are notes.

Then there are the notes which you make when Saving Vocab, there are visible in saved vocab, but not when you click on a highlighted section of text. Perhaps that is what you hoped for, maybe you could make a suggestion for the next version? I think it would be nice to have the feature.

I think it is good to have a simple grammar book to supplement the course. You can find everything on line, but being old fashioned I like a book.

I have Collins easy learning Grammar which is not expensive and cheaper on Kindle, but there are several others to choose from.

Hi Simon

I use the saved  vocab extensively, as once saved I can just click on it to see gender, case etc. Just that some don't have meaning included. Not sure why. Try it. Go to Accusative prepositions. “FUr” has a meaning as well as notes. “Ohne” doesn't. If you click on “Fur” once saved I can see it shows me it is also accusative, as I have made a note in meaning. “Ohne” only has a note section, so even though I put that it is always acc it does not give me that info when I scroll over it for an explanation.

I have to click on it to tell me. A bit odd, I know. It would also be great if they added a gender in brackets every time a new noun is introduced

Have a good evening

Unfortunately I don't have level one as I started on level 2 so I can't see the section you are referring to.

Again, I am not sure I am understanding correctly, but you only get the translation if you select the whole phrase when saving vocab. If you select a single word or part of a phrase, you have put the translation in your self. If you want any other information such as gender/case  to appear when you hover over a saved item, you have to include it in the translation.

So for “für”, you would have to put “for + accusative” in the translation as the notes dont appear in this situation. For “Frage” you could put “question (die)”

I don't know if this helps, but it would be realy nice if the notes appeared when you hover over a selection. It annoys me that when they introduce a new noun, the don't always include the gender. This is a problem all the way through to level 3.

Thanks Simon

I have used level one extensively, as the survivor ones are really good on gender. No program is perfect, so I use a lot of other resources too including books. Now that it is winter I have a lot more time on my hands. Well with Christmas coming and a houseful always challenging to keep up. My 2 youngest daughters will be home for a month including their dog.

Keep well

Hallo zusammen!

I'm afraid I haven't quite understood the problem that you're experiencing with the Saved Notes, Sharon, but has Simon's explanation of the Saved Notes feature helped you to sort it all out? If not, would you be able to include a screenshot of the issue you're describing? (You can simply paste it into your message here on the forum.)

As for the difficulties that both of you have experienced with picking up the genders of nouns, I'll pass your comments on to our German team! The review of Level 2 has unfortunately seen some delays, but it is still in the works and this is something that the team can take into consideration as they go along.

Viele Grüße

Hallo Liss

I am not experiencing difficulty in saving or getting into saved vocabulary. Use it extensively. Was wondering why some words just have notes when you want to save something and no meaning.

IWhen you click on “fur" in accussative lesson it comes up with meaning and notes. When I click on “ohne ” to save it comes up with notes only.

So when I saved “fur”  I put always acc. So in future lessons if not sure I can highliht it and it tells me it is always acc.

In ohne htis is not the case, as in saved vocabulary there is no meaning only notes.

Some words have no meaning section only notes. Wondered why

It is not an issue

Hi Maxie,

I've checked your account and it looks like für and ohne might be displaying differently because of the way that you have saved the two words.

You can tell by how the entry shows up in your Saved Vocab. You can see that ohne displays with audio attached:

However, für shows up without audio:

You can try deleting the entry without audio and saving it again. It should save with the audio this time and will then display the translation like your ohne entry:

To see your notes, you can click on the saved word to see the pop up.

I hope this makes sense! If you need any more clarification, please let us know.

Hi Aj

I do not have an issue with this. I get that you can save by clicking on a word.

What I am trying to say is if you click on “Fur” and then save there are 2 sections. in the save area. - Meaning and under it -notes.If I put it in meaning and I scroll over it, while doing the lesson,it shows as always acc.

In “ohne” if I want to save there is only one catergory. -Notes. So I have put in always acc in notes, as there is no meaning section. So when I scroll over it in a lesson it gives me the meaning of “Ohne” but the notes do not tell me it is accu always, as it does for  the “Fur”

I want to know why some words have 2 sections in save meaning and notes and other words don't.

So I was only given one option with ohne, but 2 options in fur.

Thanks Maxie

HI Simon

You must be sick of this. It is not an issue. it is what it is

Hi Maxie,

This is because für was saved without audio, while ohne was saved with audio.

When you save a word without audio, it considers it a manual entry and you have to enter your own translation.

When you save a phrase with audio, it automatically detects the associated translation.

I'm not sure how you saved für without audio, but if you delete the entry and save it again in the lesson, it will save with audio. Does that help?

Hi Aj

Deleted both Ohne and fur. Now when I go over the word with my mouse no save option comes up.

If I go over a word that I have saved it gives me an explanation. I have always only used one method. Scroll over a word, save comes up i click on it and then I put in the meaning. So have keine ahnung when it comes to saving it on audio or not. Please explain.

Hi Maxie,

You may need to refresh the page (or log out/in again). I have checked your account and saved those two words for you again. If you're still having trouble saving vocab like you usually do, please email me on support@rocketlanguages.com so I can look into it further!

Hi Aj

Have logged out and in. Fur and ohne are there and all my other words. If I scroll over them they come up with definition. If I want to save any other word now nothing happens, have not tried in Italian, but this is happening in German

What a pain this is

Sharon

Maxie

Sorry Aj

I was not double clicking on the words. It is all working. Thank you for your support. I do appreciate it. Poor Simon is going to wake up to a 100 emails.

That is why Rocket is such an awesome program, not to mention the quality and standard of the learning material
