Is this used even used in practice or is it mainly used in military circles?

Hallo RexV,

Jawohl is indeed much as you've described it above, and is essentially a stronger form of ja. It's a bit old-fashioned and isn't used as often nowadays; as you've guessed, it has military connotations. You may sometimes hear people say jawohl to one another, but often they'll only do so as a joke.

Tschüss!

Liss
