do people in German speaking countries actually use der O Saft or is this just to the benefit of Noth Amrican leaners. Until I came to North America (Canada) and had an American friend stay over had never heard of “OJ”. So am intrigued

Yes it's definitely a thing! The only suggestion I have would be to use a hyphen: “der O-Saft”.
