When I listen to the German radio station, and the news comes on, I can *almost* figure out the opening comments. They say something like:
"Es ist zwanzig Uhr. Schön guten abend."
I think!
I'm just not sure about the "Schön" word. I thought that it meant "beautiful", but given that they say it all the time, even if it's storming outside, it doesn't make sense.
So, am I interpreting it correctly?
Thanks
Judy

Hi Judy,
you are right with your guess about "schön". "Schön" means nice or beautiful. When the speaker announces the start of the news he or she says "Es ist zwanzig Uhr. Schönen guten Abend", which means: It is 8 o'clock. Good evening!" The word "schön" just stresses the fact that he or she wishes you a nice and pleasant evening, even if the day hasn't been nice at all. It's more a wish rather than a description of reality.

Hallo Judywan (and Nathalie),
Can you please tell me which radio station you're listening to? I've been trying to find one on line, like a German talk back, so I can have it on in the background and get used to hearing it spoken.
Cheers,
Martha

Hi there,
I've found this deutsch radio station. There's news and talking all the time so I have it on in the background when I'm on line.
Go to this website then press "Radio live" on the right to give it a go.
