It seems both desde and desde que can mean since. When do I need to use desde and when is desde que required?

Good question! You have me checking my translator and searching in my reference books and materials. Desde is one of those prepositions with multiple uses. It does mean "since" or "from" and I understand it mostly as a way to express time; yet one can say: "Desde mi punto de vista..." meaning "From" my point of view... Is there a most common usage of this preposition? I'm unsure and anxious to read comments from others.
