I love this app. I have tried many other apps and they don't compare to Rocket. I had taken one class in Japanese at a local college and couldn't continue because of scheduling conflicts. Rocket Japanese has allowed me to continue studying Japanese. It is the next best thing to being in class. I have found the lessons to be extremely informative and, most importantly, relevant. The lessons are real world examples of conversations that I might actually have. I highly recommend this program.
This is the most effective Japanese program I've tried so far. I love the reinforcement after every lesson. I have Duolingo and listen to the Pimsleur learning course through Audible, and I think the Rocket Japanese course really puts everything together nicely. Already, I feel like my Japanese has definitely improved.
When I first began studying the Japanese language, I didn't know anything or how to read or write.
Thanks to great teachers Sayaka san and Kenny San, I learned how to construct an effective way to listen and talk and enjoy learning the Japanese language. In my learning, I aim to evoke the same excitement of discovery and achievement that I felt, I hope to get your video learning lesson soon. You deserve 5 stars for sure.
The voice narrator needs to be replaced, she is too monotone. Lessons should still to an extent reteach verb forms or grammar rules they have mentioned before, instead of telling the audience to refer to an obscure moment in a previous audio session. Besides that, the course is helpful.
Rocket japan is great, I haven't finished yet but I can already talk to my Japanese classmates. I had purchased it during a sale and got all 3 levels for 150 which for me made it a good deal but after using it I definitely would have bought it at full price. definitely recommend this if you're on the fence between two different programs rocket japan is just so polished, not to mention they have an app that works amazingly well. 10 out of 10 I recommend.
I came to Rocket Japanese as a refugee from Duolingo. It is so good to use such a well thought out and "grown up" programme. I am especially pleased to have so much listening and speaking practice. I guess it would be very challenging to start as an absolute beginner; I'm glad I already know hiragana, katakana and a few kanji.
I indicated I would be likely to buy again because I didn't want to give a negative response, but it's a one off subscription so I don't need to, Great!
I've been using Rocket Japanese for 38 days.
I have now completed over 100 days and have to say I am even more pleased with the course now. In addition to the excellent course materials if you do have a query you get a very prompt and helpful reply. Very encouraging.
265 day update: I'm now finding the course quite challenging, which is a good thing. The language has become more complex. I like the way vocabulary and grammar you have already learned keeps cropping up again to help reiforce what I have learned.
I purchased the entire Rocket Japanese set (beginners, intermediate, advanced) for an amazing deal offered on Thanksgiving. I really, really like the way it's organized and the flow of the lessons from one to another. For the first week, I made the mistake of not learning the characters in tandem with learning the spoken word - you really have to learn them both together. People on the forum (which is very friendly with very helpful posts/responses) talked me into studying the characters at the same time. I thought it would be overwhelming, but it wasn't at all!! In fact, within 3 weeks, I will have learned all the characters - much less intimidating than I thought. I feel very confident that when I visit Japan towards the end of the year, I'll have a great grasp of the language, both spoken and written.
The only negative is the support. It takes days for anyone to get back to you. The first time I submitted a question, I think it took 5 days for a response. Luckily, my question are associated with profile questions, not support for the product, otherwise I'd find that very irritating.
I really liked rocket languages when i first started using it for japanese. They replaced one of the voice actors (kenny) with what im assuming is a native speaker (who also goes by kenny) who sounds like he has a frog in his throat. they also added the worlds most monotone woman to narrarate the course. These changes have made listening to the interactive courses almost unbearable and i really hope they change the voice actors back.
When I first started University back in 2017 I decided to take on the Japanese language and looked at so many resources. Rocket languages came up back then but I passed on it because of the price (poor student life). I tried many other resources but none of them really teach the language more than show you some phrases and make you memorise stuff.
I decided to try learn the language again and after finishing all the free lessons I figured I should make use of the discount and took the dive to purchase the course. I have only been learning for 4 days so far but in that time I have learnt more that I did in 2 weeks back when I first tried.
Everything is covered from written language, spoken language, grammar, you name it!
Highly recommend Rocket Japanese to anyone looking to give it a try. I'm sure the other languages are great too!
My feelings with this course are quite mixed. On one hand, there is a lot of material and you pick up useful phrases from the very start. On the other hand there are several issues which in the long run are quite frustrating especially in the testing part
1) Apart from the Quiz section, everything else is clearly automatically generated from the material. This means you can have the same word repeated 2 or 3 times. In the "Know it" part there are cases where you cannot know what to say because two words have the same english translation (tourist).
2) Speech recognition is frustrating. It stops listening while you are talking, sometimes it doesn't want to recognize what you say no matter what (I even tried playing back the native audio from my phone near to the computer microphone, and it didn't even recognize the native speaker!) and sometimes it says 100% even if you mess up a few syllabes.
Response from Rocket Languages
Response from Rocket Languages: Hi Michele - Thanks for the detailed review. Rocket Japanese is due for a full review in 2020. Most of the issues that you mention will be sorted out at that stage. As far as speech recognition goes, we recommend a headset microphone for best results, or the iOS/Android app.
