Very helpful lessons. Not too long to listen to the audio part. I don't really care for the written part since I'm not going to be writing in French. I just need to learn conversational French. Some things are not relevant like learning "Welcome to the first lesson." I've already forgotten that.

Rocket Languages is an excellent way to learn a language . It opens you up to how you can pronounce the language through following the tutor. I enjoy the bit where you have to write because it is a good practice to know the words and how to pronounce them. I also like the flash cards because they enable you to pronounce and get to hear if you are doing it properly. My favorite is the quiz because it gives me the opportunity to show that I understand what I have been learning. I like Rocket Languages to an extend that I will not hesitate to recommend it to anyone willing to try it. I enjoy it when it also corrects spelling to show you where you went wrong right away.

I have only just started the course which is fine so far. My criticism would be that it does not reflect the way people talk in France. No one has ever said salut to me and the standard greeting is bonjour

I like everything. But sometimes is hard to repeat the whole sentence. It would be easier if it was word by word.

Overall the course has some good points and some not so good,

The good is the audio course, I am not sure how far it can get you towards fluency but every little helps and the course does present information well. I found the banter a tad annoying at first but it's grown on me and I have come across stuff that i haven't seen elsewhere. My feeling is that it will get you no further than basic communication and that michel thomas method is far better, as is pimsleur and paul noble. I think their methods get you speaking and understanding more effectively and more quickly; that said this is a good supplement to other learning systems.

The bad for me is the grammar section. It is basically just explanations that could have come from any textbook but without exercises that support the material very well. I think for what they are doing here a textbook is a better option, its cheaper and you will get better reinforcement of the lessons. In fact the quizes attached seem completely irrelevant and are just vocab memorization.

The quizzes for the most part are just dull to be honest.

Response from Rocket Languages

Hi Mark - Thanks for the detailed review. Rocket French is going to be re-examined soon, especially with regards to the quizzes.

My product review should be understood in the context of a man in his 70s struggling to learn a new language. Before purchasing the premium version of Rocket French, I had used Duo, Babbel, and taken an introductory course at a local community college. Duo is easy enough, not demanding. It is a source of vocabulary, but one can put in many hours without confidence of using the words in speech. Babbel promised more interaction, but the speech sensitivity is seriously flawed. Otherwise the program is brisk and challenging. My college class showed that one's hearing in late retirement is unreliable, so keeping up with students less than ⅓ of my age was troubling.
Rocket French requires lots of oral practice, which the others lack. The tablet version of the program (I use a new iPad Pro with gobs of memory) has a problem similar to Babbel's, where the end of sentences are ignored. I can test this by just repeating the phrases that are missed and it translates those just fine. On my desktop iMac, the program works just fine.
Rocket French is more expensive than the other drills, and quite possibly less costly to create. I find that the method is engaging and leans more directly on the need to listen and speak. It has become my primary learning tool.

I've only been using Rocket French for 6 days, several hours per day, but I really like the balance of the approach so far. They don't give you too much to absorb at any one time, and they do a good job of going over it from different angles to aid your comprehension and retention. It's a casual, but effective approach. I've had no issues using Firefox, although the voice recognition isn't there, but I have no problems evaluating my own pronunciation by comparing it to the audio. I did have problems with Edge. Haven't used it with Safari yet.

Response from Rocket Languages

Hi Robert - Thanks for the feedback. The voice recognition system, Rocket Record, works on Chrome, Safari, and the iOS and Android apps!
