I really like the interactive dialog with the conversation and chance to practice and record my responses and am pleased about what I've learned thus far. However, I really wish they would have more of this in each module vs. the 'self study'/written portions in each module. I learn best when I hear conversation/dialog vs. the dictation/response of the lessons. For example in module 1 there are 5 lessons of conversation but 10 lessons of pure dictation/response. This doesn't suit my learning style well.
Voice recognition is very variable with certain short words. eg un, deux trois. The rest of the numbers appear fine. How do you get better than 35% on a one word answer eg être?
Overall I think the programme is very good
So far RL is okay. The audios are entertaining, but a tad slow and I wished that they were a bit less English-heavy as it really breaks my French-thinking mindset. Any technical issues (and there are quite a few given the nature of the voice recognition software) that are reported fall onto deaf ears. Overall, it's an okay program, but needs heavy supplementation from grammar and vocab books (as all learners should have anyway).
I have been using the program for about a month and a half now and I have found it somewhat useful. My level is above that of a new beginner but not quite yet intermediate. My concerns about the program, starting with the idea that most people want what will be most useful i.e. picking up useful spoken language for travel, is that particularly when testing, the program expects your responses to be almost in the same order as their introduction. If the expected answer starts with Tu and you use the Vous form, you are marked as incorrect. The program should note what form is wanted. A "hint" function also would be nice to help someone with responses as learning, not just simple memorization, is the goal. The program also occasionally makes some unexpected detours from what is useful. For example, one lesson moved from general travel issues to a flight of fancy to go skiing. I did not find a lot of useful information in that lesson. Finally, today I took a test which contained a large number of questions involving the "passe simple". The last question on the test asked how much one would expect to hear the passe simple and the correct answer was "almost never". So, I feel a lot of time was wasted that could have been better spent elsewhere. I hope these comments are considered helpful. There are good things here but a few tweaks would make it much better.
Bon, J'aime les langues et Rocket French m'a donné une bonne chance pour pratiquer la langue français. J'ai trouvé une bonne oppurtunite pour l'ecriture, la partie oral et l'écoute. Bien sûr j'ai besoin de pratiquer la conversation, je crois que la conversation est le chose plus importante, j'espère que Rocket French a un moyen pour fait la conversation entre éleves
I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to try to use this program. The program has so much trouble hearing what I'm repeating back to it. The company's FAQ says to use headsets; I am. Then it says it's because they have it tuned to "native speakers." Well, what good does that do a person who is not native? I don't think native speakers are using RF! I'm not new to the French language so my pronunciation is not bad. I can only imagine how annoyed someone completely new to this would be feeling right now. If it's anything close to how I feel, it's not very good.
Response from Rocket Languages
Hi Lynn - I have emailed you to find out more about what's going on. The voice recognition system works off a Google database so it should be very exact.
Very poor experience regarding the numerous simple spelling mistakes and inconsistent and sometimes just plain wrong translations. I expected much more from a paid for language learning tool.
Response from Rocket Languages
Thanks so much for your review. When writing translations, we try to find a balance between being as literal as possible, while also conveying the meaning of a sentence. If there are any phrases you think we could translate more literally, please don't hesitate to send them through to our customer support team. Regarding spelling errors, we are in the process of going through all of the Rocket French lessons at the moment, and so you should soon find that this is no longer an issue. Our apologies for the frustration caused!
I thought all the lessons would be audio such that you could listen in your car or with headphones while working out or walking but some require you to read and hear. I think even alphabet, numbers and grammar can all be made in an audio version. Also, I do not like the fact that you can’t stop and review an audio lesson. At least on an iPhone you can't just stop a lesson and go back to the beginning. You have to let it play out until the end to start over.

Hi Looman - Thanks for your review. The grammar (Language & Culture) lessons have a lot more English explanations and tables that don't work well as just audio. On the iphone app, you need to expand the player at the bottom of the screen. With that you can use the slider to move through the audio!
Wish there was more grammar lessons and verb conjugations.
Response from Rocket Languages
Hi Hannah - Make sure you check out the Language & Culture lessons, which have lots of detail on verb conjugations and other important grammar topics.
hi. i didn't feel like 7 days was a long enough trial. with working all day and a household to run at night that doesn't leave much time to get even a little grip on the language. i find the price a little too high for me. i'm a single mom of 4. not easy
