Classroom Japanese brought online - with room for improvement.
It's a well structured language training with actual Japanese speaking and good explanations of vocabulary and the language in general. The spoken Japanese really helps with recognition and pronunciation, great to listen to Sayaka and Shota. Having Rocket languages is like having your own language course online.
It is also where I find Rocket languages to be missing opportunities as it focus on providing classroom experience instead of supporting exploring the language trough individual self study.
There are many limitations on what you are allowed to do, for instance when you start a practice you cannot reset it nor show all vocabulary, you are forced to complete it. It would be better if everything would be available all ways.
The text-to-speech is also limited (Google based?), short words are often not understood (adding a random です helps), and longer sentences pronounced wrong is often corrected (saying 今日はいい天気です。でも、明日は雨です。without the rain is magically corrected).
The biggest limitation is there is no system to help recalling. Vocabulary may be learned but then forgotten again. A Spaced Repetition System is missing although it is recognized as the best way to remember tings long term. All the kanji, kana, sounds and explanations are there, missing are pictures and the SRS itself.
At least there should be a simple way to export it all to e.g. Anki to make up for the limitation.
Response from Rocket Languages
Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review, Peter. We’re delighted to hear that you’re enjoying the structured lessons, as well as the recordings with Sayaka and Shota. At the same time, we appreciate your thoughtful feedback on areas for improvement, such as the flexibility of the testing activities. While we do not offer a spaced repetition feature per se, I would recommend checking out the Favorites system; this should allow you to build your own custom activities for those words that you find particularly challenging. Of course, this does not allow you to randomly revisit course content; for that, I would recommend the Module Certification Tests, located in the Tools section. We’ll make sure your comments are shared with our development team. Thank you again for helping us grow and improve!

I love the fact hat writing (especially kanji) is integrated into the lesson.
Response from Rocket Languages
We strive to teach every aspect of Japanese, and that includes Kanji, so we're glad to you are enjoying learning it with us!
I was looking for a platform to provide a more oral oriented direction and this fits perfectly for my aim, which it focus a lot on speaking exercise and little options for you to choose if you would like to show the romaji or not to assist your learning with the Japanese vowels and sentences.

Response from Rocket Languages
Thank you for your kind words, Miguel! We’re so glad you're enjoying learning Japanese with us. You're absolutely right; regular practice is key, and we're here to support you every step of the way.
What I liked: Grammar lessons and examples. The conversational lessons are generally good, but I thought that some were not really applicable to what I wanted to learn. For example, several focus on "workplace" conversations that don't seem particularly relevant.
What I don't like: The speech recognition program is terrible. I get the impression that Rocket Languages (1) didn't adequately test this program prior to incorporating it into the course, and (2) doesn't seem to be interested in trying to fix it.
The speech recognition module actively detracts from the utility of the course. Please bring back the older speech recognition program or fix this one.
The bottom line: Not recommended due to speech recognition issues.
Response from Rocket Languages
Thank you for the detailed feedback, Ellen. We’re happy to hear you appreciated the grammar and conversational lessons, though we understand your concerns about the speech recognition. We're sorry this aspect impacted your experience. If you're open to it, we’d love to hear more about the issue at [email protected] to better assist you and get your Japanese language learning back on track!
I love Rocket Japanese, I think it's great to learn.
Few things I would like to see improved:
- It's impossible to click on words composed of kanjis to "break them apart" and understand their meaning apart from their literal translation.
- Even if you disable romajis in the options, they still show up during quizzes and they make things too easy.
Response from Rocket Languages
Thank you for your thoughtful review, Vincent! We’re so glad Rocket Japanese is helping you learn effectively. We also appreciate your suggestions; further breaking down kanji is a valuable point, and we’ve passed your feedback to our development team for consideration. As for the romaji showing in the activities section, if it is the flashcards you're referring to, you may need to ensure that romaji is not selected in the flashcard settings. All the best with your Japanese language learning and feel free to get in touch with our support team if you have any other questions or feedback!

Rocket Japanese is a great course for structured learning, especially for improving speaking skills. I really like the speaking practice — it helps me apply what I learn and build confidence in real conversation. The voice recognition and dialogue exercises make it easy to practice pronunciation naturally. It fits perfectly alongside my other study methods, like watching anime with Migaku and using NativShark, since Rocket Japanese gives me the grammar and structure I sometimes miss from immersion. Overall, it’s a solid, motivating course that balances fun and effectiveness, especially if you want to actually speak Japanese, not just understand it.
Response from Rocket Languages

We’re especially glad the structured grammar and pronunciation practice are adding value to your learning. Your dedication really shows; keep going strong!
